Loft Conversions

A loft conversion turns unused roof space into a bedroom, office or bathroom without extending your home's footprint. The right type, such as a roof light, dormer, hip-to-gable or mansard conversion, depends on the shape of your roof, the head height and what planning rules allow.

Loft Conversions
FAQ & Guidance

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our loft conversions service.

How much does a loft conversion cost?

The cost depends on the type of conversion, the size and shape of the roof, the structural work needed, where the staircase goes, the number of windows, whether you add a bathroom and the finish you choose. A dormer or mansard conversion involves more structural work than a roof light conversion.

Is my loft suitable for conversion?

The main factors are the head height in the loft, the pitch and structure of the roof, and where a staircase can go. Send us photos and approximate measurements and we can tell you what needs checking.

Do I need planning permission for a loft conversion?

Many loft conversions can be built under permitted development, but some, such as those changing the front roof slope or in conservation areas, need planning permission. Building Regulations approval is needed when a loft is converted into a habitable room.

What is the difference between a dormer and a mansard conversion?

A dormer is a box-shaped extension built out from the roof slope, adding headroom and floor space. A mansard changes the roof slope itself to make it almost vertical, giving more space but usually involving more work. A roof light conversion keeps the roof shape and adds windows.
